Andy Sernovitz is CEO of GasPedal, a company he describes as a “word of mouth marketing consulting firm”. He was previously CEO and a founder of the Word of Mouth Marketing Association, innovating the idea of consumer controlled marketing which has since become a phenomenon.
Sernovitz is also a speaker at industry events and an adjunct lecturer, teaching Word of Mouth Marketing at Northwestern University, Medill School of Journalism. He formerly taught Internet Entrepreneurship at the Wharton School of Business at University of Pennsylvania. He has been an email marketing guru and founded a large trade group, the Association for Interactive Marketing, during the dot com era.
Sernovitz is the author of the book, Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking. In it, he teaches business small and large how to use honest, inexpensive social marketing techniques to make their companies more profitable while making customers happier.
He is also the editor of the blog Damn! I Wish I’d Thought of That! where he offers tips and advice on building valuable word of mouth campaigns. In a recent post, Sernovitz encapsulates the Word of Mouth philosophy thusly:
“When a company focuses on earning the respect and recommendation of their customers, it fundamentally changes the way a business operates. You become obsessed with the individual customer experience, you learn how rewarding it is to engage with your fans, and you find yourself, bit by bit, doing your part to make the world a little more pleasant to be a part of. And above all, you see why it’s more fun to work at a company people love to talk about.”
GasPedal
Gas Pedal has been teaching businesses how to use Word of Mouth Marketing for measurable results since 1999. Its clients include Dell, Sprint, Microsoft, GE, Kraft, and Tivo, among others. Rather that manage campaigns for companies, GasPedal teaches companies to do it themselves, to create action plans and execute them. By examining the company’s current objectives and resources, GasPedal is able to recommend specific steps to generate word of mouth advertising, prioritizing recommendations for the largest impact with the least amount of time and effort.
